Discussed End Stage Kidney Diseases in Developing Countries

The 14th Biennial Conference of the Pakistan Society of Nephrology (PSN) continued on the 2nd day at the Agha Hasan Abedi and Suleman Dawood Transplant Tower Auditoriums of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).

Renal health in developing nations is a significant concern, and the distinguished nephrologists highlighted the concerning impact of environmental degradation on kidney health. Pakistan is one of the countries most impacted by global warming, even though it makes very little contribution to the phenomenon. The experts highlighted during the 14th biennial PSN conference that recent data showed that about 60% of patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) had underlying kidney stones or an unknown etiology. This deterioration is thought to be a major contributing factor to the rising prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

They emphasized the need for community-based studies, a holistic kidney registry, and randomized controlled trials to gain a deeper understanding of the disease and tailor treatment strategies to the specific context.
They acknowledged the limitations of current treatment options available for ESKD patients in Pakistan. Hemodialysis, the primary available modality, poses environmental concerns through high energy consumption and water depletion. Furthermore, during the Biennial PSN conference, the experts said that kidney transplantation programs haven’t expanded sufficiently to meet the demand, there is a lack of society’s participation in deceased organ donation programs, and peritoneal dialysis adoption remains limited due to insufficient industry support and interest in government healthcare initiatives.
