On the occasion of World Hypertension Day (May 17th), the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation’s (SIUT) Paediatric Nephrology Department took a significant step to raise awareness about the growing issue of childhood hypertension. They organized a seminar titled “Childhood Hypertension: Call to Action for Early Diagnosis and Management,” bringing together healthcare professionals from around the world. Over 400 participants, including 100 in-person and online registrants from 30 countries, participated in the day-long event. The target audience comprised healthcare workers involved in pediatric care, particularly nephrologists (kidney specialists) and pediatricians. Traditionally, childhood hypertension was associated with underlying conditions like kidney problems or birth defects. However, the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and even drug abuse in teenagers is contributing to a rise in primary hypertension (high blood pressure with no identifiable cause).

Importance of Early Detection and Management Strategies
The seminar emphasized the importance of screening all healthy children over three years old for hypertension at least once. Children with risk factors like obesity, premature birth, kidney disease, heart disease, or other chronic conditions require even closer monitoring and potential early referral to specialists. The discussions explored various diagnostic tools and management strategies, particularly focusing on approaches suitable for children residing in resource-limited settings.
Collaboration and Training for a Healthier Future
The seminar concluded with a resounding call for action. Speakers and participants commended SIUT and the Department of Pediatric Nephrology for organizing the event.
