Established in 1971 with an eight-bed urology ward under the leadership of Dr. Professor Adibul Hasan Rizvi, SIUT was regarded as the cleanest and most active ward in Civil Hospital, providing free medical care with exceptional efficiency.
SIUT’s Philosophy
SIUT’s philosophy is that free treatment with dignity is a right for everyone, regardless of color, race, or religion. Dr. Professor Adibul Hasan Rizvi, the founder and director of the institute, has tirelessly worked day and night to ensure that the institute provides free treatment to thousands of patients.
In addition to urology, nephrology, and transplantation, SIUT has expanded to become a center for various specialties, including liver, intestine, lung, heart, diabetes, breast, general medicine, pediatric heart surgery, liver transplants, kidney transplant eye care, and ENT (ear, nose, throat) paediatric urology and pediatric nephrology services.
Additionally, modern X-ray machines, CT scans, MRIs, advanced laboratory facilities, and a blood bank are available. The institute takes full responsibility for the treatment, medication, and investigations of the patients.
Largest Dialysis Centre in the Country
SIUT hosts the largest dialysis center, where approximately 8,000 patients receive dialysis every week in Karachi alone, and 6 to 8 kidney transplants are performed weekly. The institute also treats children with kidney, bladder, and liver diseases. Advanced technology like robotic surgery is available not only at SIUT Karachi but also at SIUT Sukkur.
Robotic procedures for kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers, as well as intestinal cancer surgeries and fistula operations during childbirth, are highly beneficial. These methods result in smaller incisions, less blood loss, quicker recovery times, fewer infections, and a lower risk of complications associated with large incisions. If further cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy are needed, there’s no delay in starting them.
Recently, a department for pediatric cardiac care and surgeries has been established, where hundreds of surgeries for congenital heart diseases in children have been performed. Since 1971, SIUT has continually expanded its services to meet patient needs. What started as an 8-bed facility for kidney and bladder surgeries has now grown into an extensive medical system with thousands of beds. The institute provides free treatments in nephrology, transplants, cardiology, hepatology, and care for pediatric and women’s diseases.
Dr. Adibul Hasan Rizvi and his dedicated team have made this progress possible through relentless effort. Their vision includes providing medical care close to people’s homes, and to achieve this, facilities have been established in various locations to offer accessible healthcare services.
This journey, which started in 1971 from the urology ward of the Civil Hospital, gradually expanded into an institute due to the increasing number of patients and their needs.
In 1999, a dialysis center was opened in Drigh Colony. In 2000, the Deewan Farooq Medical Center was expanded. In 2005, the Hanifa Suleman Dawood Oncology Center was established for cancer treatment, providing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.
During the 2005 earthquake, SIUT set up camps in Muzaffarabad and other affected areas to provide dialysis facilities to the people. Following this disaster, a dialysis center was established there for the local population.
In 2010, a dialysis center was set up in Nazimabad, making it easier for patients who needed dialysis two to three times a week, so they wouldn’t have to travel far from home. The dialysis center in Garden is another facility, along with the Korangi dialysis center.
Considering the difficulties faced by people from other cities in Sindh who had to travel to Karachi for treatment, the Chhabilani Medical Center was established in Sukkur in 2011. It offers dialysis, kidney and bladder surgeries, stone treatment through laser, and robotic surgeries. Thousands of patients are benefiting from these services.
In 2012, a dialysis center was established in Garden West Karachi. In the same year, a basic health center was established in Kathore for the local population, where common illnesses such as fever, malaria, TB, and cough are treated. Screening for kidney stones, kidney diseases, and hepatitis B and C is also available, providing convenience to the people.
In 2013, the Mehrunnisa Medical Center was established in Korangi, offering dialysis, stone treatment through laser, surgeries for kidney, bladder, and urinary tract obstructions and stricture urethra surgeries . This institution provides significant relief to the local residents. It also has a modern PET scan facility for diagnosing and monitoring cancer, which is free for cancer patients. This scan, which is very expensive in private institutions, helps determine whether cancer cells are dead or alive and whether further treatment is needed.
In 2016, another extension was made to the Suleman Dawood Transplant Center, where liver transplant patients are admitted. Considering the difficulties faced by the people of Larkana, a dialysis center was established in 2020, providing excellent dialysis facilities to the people.
In 2023, a dialysis center was inaugurated in Shikarpur. In the same year, a new hospital by SIUT was established at Sukkur Bypass, covering an area of 28 acres. The first phase of the hospital has begun, including dialysis and outpatient services, which will continue to expand. The building meets international standards.
A cardiac and children’s hospital by SIUT is now being planned, with a 14-story building set to commence construction soon. This institution has been continuously striving to provide quality treatment to patients. Recently, with the help of philanthropists, SIUT acquired the Regent Plaza Hotel, which will be converted into a hospital. The existing hospitals by SIUT are inadequate for the growing number of patients, and the demand is increasing day by day.
As SIUT has always been mindful of patients’ needs, the hotel will be transformed into a hospital providing free treatment, which is the vision of Professor Dr. Adibul Hassan Rizvi. The philosophy of this institution is that free treatment is a basic right that should be available to everyone, regardless of any differences, and it should be provided close to their homes.
The step taken by SIUT to convert a commercial property into a free treatment hospital is unparalleled. It is an exemplary move in the medical field, one that has never been seen or heard of before. This initiative will undoubtedly benefit the general public immensely.
